Leadership By Grace Alone
RUF is a ministry by students for students. What that means is you are not only a valuable part of RUF but you are its priority. By very intentional design for over 25 years, RUF is a ministry established, sustained, and led by undergraduate students from Brown, JWU, RISD, and other Providence-area colleges and schools. As a ministry of the Presbyterian Church in America, we do have a Presbyterian-ordained minister and other staff who assist and advise, but let that not mislead you. Students are the precious treasure and the vital resource of this campus ministry. In order to better serve the campus communities in which you live and work, the campus ministry's great goal is to equip, empower, and enable you to do the work of ministry...of outreach and discipleship to your on-campus neighbors, thereby fulfilling the high call of God to promote the gospel of Jesus Christ (Gen. 12:1-3; Mat. 28:19-20).
"I'm not sure if I'm leadership 'material.' Does that make sense?" It is perfectly understandable if someone has reservations. More than that, this ministry is utterly sympathetic to those who have not only reservations but also personal doubts and struggle. If that is you, consider what one author shares:
"Joseph had a prison record. Sarah laughed at God's promises. Jacob hurt his family by playing favorites with his kids. Naomi and Ruth were widows. Job lost everything he had ever worked for. Jeremiah was depressed and suicidal. Rahab had been a prostitute. Noah got drunk. Moses stuttered. Are you getting the picture now? Is it dawning on you that God doesn't have to recruit perfect people (there aren't any!) and will use just about anybody who is willing to trust him? God does some of his best work through the most unlikely people. He draws some beautifully straight lines with some of the most crooked of sticks." [heartlight.org; emphasis added]
For sure, there may be legitimate reason for you to recuse yourself from Christian ministry leadership. But often times we are too quick to do so only because of a generally tender conscience. If you know that you are weak, inconsistent, and a sinner, that can make for a perfect leader who stands a chance of seeing the all-powerful grace of God in Jesus Christ whose grace is powerful enough to wash away the sins of the world (John 3:17). Thanks be to God!
In that vein, all that RUF requires is regular (i.e. twice a month or more) participation in the life of our community. You may feel free to nominate yourself! You may feel free to nominate your friends! If the latter, we just ask that you bring it up with them first so that they would be encouraged and renewed.
